Miguel VRF Energy Storage
EPC Services Company for San Diego Gas and Electric
The vanadium redox flow battery system was developed by Sumitomo Electric and is the first of its kind in the United States.
The Miguel VRF Energy Storage project is a 2MW/8MWh pilot battery storage project located in East San Diego County. The structural and electrical design was provided by ECI, with construction by EPC Services Company. The project entailed conversion of an existing storage yard into a site suitable to house the energy storage system. Key project issues included a compressed design and construction timeline to ensure operation by the required commissioning date, as well as the challenging nature of underlying soils, which required an extensive subsurface structural system consisting of geosynthetic reinforcement, a deepened class 2 base section and a network of perforated subdrains. Also, attentive precise grading design was required to provide the minimum and maximum depths of embedment for the container vaults within the existing topographic constraints of the existing sloped storage pad.
